Hospice Care is a type of palliative care for terminally ill patients and support for their families. Pull the jars out of the water with a jar lifter, pour the water back into the pot, and ladle the apple butter into the jars. Once all the jars are full, put them back in the boiling water for about 10 minutes.

My particular slow cooker holds about 5lbs of apple slices, and if I remember correctly that made about 3-4 half-pint jars (1.5 to 2 pints). The actual yield will depend on how long you cook it, as some people finish their apple butter a bit thinner, and it’ll also depend on the apples you use. The more water they contain, the more it’ll cook-off and lower your yield.

They suggest starting with 6 lbs apples and adding 2 cups apple cider, 1 1/2 cup brown sugar, 2 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp cloves, and allspice. While traditional, slow-cooked apple butter is absolutely delicious, the method was actually developed as a method of food preservation. Sugar is a natural preservative, and making apple butter the traditional way concentrated the sugar in the apples to extend their shelf life as a spread. Sealed hot with a bit of oil or wax, apple butter would keep for quite a long time. I always can these in pints or half pints.
